Home > National Parks > Ol Pejeta Wildlife Conservancy

Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and a crucial stronghold for the northern white rhino subspecies. It is situated in Laikipia County, central Kenya, lying between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare ranges. The conservancy covers approximately 36,400 acres (147 km$^2$). It operates as a private, non-profit entity under the Sweetwaters Game Reserve banner, though the entire area is managed as the conservancy. Its primary mission revolves around securing a future for wildlife, community development, and providing a sustainable model for conservation.

Community and Research Initiatives

  • Community Engagement: A significant portion of the conservancy’s revenue is reinvested into local community development projects, focusing on education, water access, healthcare, and employment opportunities. This approach fosters goodwill and ensures local communities benefit directly from wildlife conservation.

  • Research: Ol Pejeta facilitates crucial scientific research. It hosts the Ol Pejeta Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees, which is operated by the Jane Goodall Institute. It also hosts research facilities studying animal behavior, anti-poaching technologies, and sustainable grazing practices.

  • Sustainable Practices: The conservancy implements innovative, science-based management techniques, including controlled livestock grazing, which helps maintain the savanna ecosystem health and benefits both wildlife and livestock.

Tourism and Sustainability

  • Tourism Offerings: Visitors can enjoy guided game drives, bush walks, horseback safaris, and visits to the rhino sanctuaries and the chimpanzee enclosure. Accommodation ranges from luxury camps to more rustic tented options within the reserve.

  • Funding Conservation: Every visitor dollar directly contributes to anti-poaching patrols, veterinary care, scientific research, and community projects, ensuring a sustainable financial foundation for the conservancy’s extensive work.

The Ol Pejeta Wildlife Conservancy stands as a premier example of successful, integrated conservation in the 21st century. By serving as the global lifeline for the northern white rhino, protecting endangered ungulates, fostering strong community partnerships, and maintaining a thriving ecosystem, it plays an indispensable role in securing Kenya’s—and Africa’s—natural heritage. Its commitment to science-based management and community benefit offers a blueprint for conservation success worldwide.
