Chyulu Hills National Park is a volcanic wonderland in southeastern Kenya, known for its emerald-green hills, ancient lava flows, and underground caves. It’s a serene escape for hikers, nature lovers, and those seeking panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro

Overview & Location

Tucked between Tsavo West and Amboseli National Parks, Chyulu Hills National Park spans approximately 741 square kilometers and was gazetted in 1983. The park protects the eastern flanks of the Chyulu Hills, a 100-kilometer-long volcanic range formed by eruptions as recent as the 19th century

Landscape & Geology

Chyulu’s terrain is a dramatic blend of:

  • Rolling green hills often called the “Green Hills of Africa”, a phrase popularized by Ernest Hemingway
  • Black lava fields and ash cones, remnants of past eruptions
  • Leviathan Cave, one of Africa’s longest lava tubes, stretching over 11 kilometers

Despite the lack of permanent surface water, the porous volcanic rock feeds underground aquifers that nourish springs like Mzima, Kibwezi, and Makindu, vital to the surrounding plains

Wildlife Highlights

While less densely populated than other parks, Chyulu Hills hosts:

  • Elephants, buffaloes, eland, and giraffes
  • Predators like leopards and hyenas
  • Rare species such as giant forest hogs and bushbucks
  • A rich birdlife including sunbirds, turacos, and raptors

The park’s elevation and vegetation zones—from grasslands to montane forests—create diverse habitats for wildlife

Activities & Attractions

Chyulu Hills is ideal for:

  • Hiking and horseback safaris across scenic ridges
  • Cave exploration in the lava tubes
  • Birdwatching and landscape photography
  • Scenic drives with views of Kilimanjaro on clear days

It’s a quieter alternative to Kenya’s busier parks, offering solitude and raw beauty

Climate & Best Time to Visit

The park is generally cool and dry, with rains in April–May and November–December. The dry season (June–October) is best for hiking and wildlife viewing

Chyulu Hills National Park is a poetic landscape of fire and forest—where lava meets mist, and silence reigns.
