Your 3-Day Kenyan Safari
Today marks the beginning of your thrilling escape from Mombasa into the renowned wilderness of Kenya! We are heading to the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the famous Salt Lick Lodge. Over the next three days, we trade the ocean breeze for the savanna air, seeking out incredible wildlife, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable moments. Keep your camera ready, as you are about to experience the raw, beautiful heart of East Africa!
Safari Highlights
- Elevated Rooms and Walkways: The lodge is famously built on stilts, with rooms clustered in circular blocks and connected by aerial walkways, offering elevated views over the surrounding Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary.
- The Waterhole: The lodge overlooks a very active floodlit waterhole, which is a major attraction for animals, especially in the dry season. This ensures 24-hour game viewing right from the comfort of your room or the main communal areas.
- The Underground Tunnel & Bunker: A unique feature is the underground tunnel and viewing bunker with ground-level windows that offer unbelievably close, yet safe, access to animals like elephants, buffaloes, and various antelopes as they come to drink.
- Day Game Drives: Early morning and late afternoon game drives are conducted in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary (where the lodge is located) and the adjacent Tsavo West National Park. The sanctuary is a protected area for a wide variety of game including the "Big Four" (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard).
- Night Game Drives: This is a particularly exciting highlight, offering the chance to see nocturnal animals not often spotted during the day, such as spotted and striped hyena, civet, genet, porcupine, and bush babies. It's a thrilling opportunity to potentially witness predators actively hunting.
- Walking Safaris: Accompanied by a qualified ranger, these walks focus on the unique flora, smaller wildlife, and the fascinating ecology often missed from a vehicle.
- Location: Situated in the heart of the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Kenya, a private conservancy next to Tsavo West National Park.
- Wildlife: The area is known for its large elephant population (part of the larger Tsavo ecosystem), as well as lion, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and over 300 species of birds.
- Bush Meals: The lodge can arrange special "Out of Africa" dinners or bush breakfasts set up in the wild for a memorable dining experience.
- Cultural Entertainment: Traditional music and authentic Taita dancers often perform in the lobby during the evening.
- World War I Heritage: Guests can visit the museum at the nearby sister property, Taita Hills Safari Resort & Spa, which displays World War I memorabilia from the region's rich history.
